Whitby west pier

Casablanca2HB's picture

I favour winter months to avoid the crowds. That way I can photograph without herds of sightseers in my viewfinder. The pier is open 24/7 and is perfect for wide angle lenses. You can walk to the end of the pier and climb down a stepladder to shoot underneath the pier too. If you arrive at sunrise in the winter you'll have the place to yourself probably.

Plenty of food outlets which offer great quality at terrific value, e.g. Kamthai / Mr Chips / Cosa Nostra. All the fish and chip shops are good of course with fresh cod - this is Yorkshire after all!  It's a short walk up to St Mary's on the other side of the estuary where you can photograph the church with its beautiful box pews. If the ruined abbey is open that's great too but costs because owned by English Heritage. Further afield with your car are Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay - both gorgeous locations.
