Whitby Harbour

Digital Photography Courses's picture

Whitby is an ancient sea port close to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It also has to be one of the best places in the country for photographers. Many DPC students have visited Whitby and I never cease to be amazed at the variety of images they submit. There always seems to be something to photograph at all times of the year but I would tend to go out of season if you don't like people in your shots. Be aware though that the Abbey isn't open every day during the winter months and the pier might be close on rough sea days. A small set of steps will let you see over the Abbey wall if it's closed or you would like a sunset picture out of hours.

You should be fine with any combination of lenses but I do like the 10mm wide angle for the pier shots. I would get there early though if you want to avoid people. I found the best shots were from low down so take a bin liner to lay on if you need to keep clean.

One of the nice things we found is that a lot of the pubs and accommodations were dog friendly which was a real bonus.
