Finchale Priory, County Durham

macuser's picture

Finchale Priory is situated in a scenic spot on the banks of the River Wear. Extensive remains of the 13th century priory still remain.

Lots of interesting photographic compositions to be had, the undercroft is particularly special.

If you could get permission, I'm sure it would be a fantastic location for light painting. Suitable for sunset shots if you shoot the priory from the opposite side of the River Wear.

The buildings and immediate grounds are now managed by English Heritage, admission is free but remember to check the opening times (I went an hour before closing and it was pretty quiet). Tea room and other facilities at the nearby caravan park.

There are lots of pleasant riverside walks in the local area.
