Canary Wharf Skyline, From the East, London

macuser's picture

The sleek tower blocks of London's Canary Wharf dominate the city's skyline and include one of Britain's tallest buildings, One Canada Square. Whilst there are many viewpoints of them around London, this location is one of the better ones. Situated in front of the Millennium Dome, now rebranded as the O2, this location offers spectacular views across Canary Wharf, particularly at sunset when the sun sets directly behind the towers. For me the best time to visit is sunset-dusk when there is still colour in the sky, but the lights in the buildings are apparent and provide nice reflections across the River Thames.

Nearby is Richard Wilson's sculpture 'Slice of Reality', the remains of an old dredger. The piece of art is definitely worth including as a striking foreground subject if the conditions are right, for this you will need to check a tide table. The other major nearby opportunity is the Millennium Dome, a building which like Canary Wharf looks best at night when it's lit up.
