Arolla Glacier (Bas Glacier d'Arolla) Mont Collon - Evolène

macuser's picture

This is a truly spectacular place, you can't beat a glacier for landscape photography. Interestingly the Glacier d'Arolla is actually composed of two glaciers, the Glacier du Mont Collon and the Haut Glacier d'Arolla. I found a stone shelter next to the pathway (marked on the map) which made an interesting foreground subject. I visited for a few days in late September and the weather was very changeable, one minute 20 degrees the next snow! The location itself is quite remote, park in Arolla and then walk. The walk takes about 2-3 hours in each direction and there are signs that point you in the general direction - keep you bearings on the glacier and you can't go wrong. It would however be a good idea to take a map. It's fairly step at times so good footwear is a must. I'm sure that path will be covered in snow in the winter months and the conditions harsh, so unless you are a mountaineer, the best time to access this location would be mid to later summer.

Location is suitable for the following types of photography

Hérens, Valais 1986
