Kielder Observatory

This is truly an awe-inspiring photography location. The observatory sits in the middle of Northumberland’s Kielder Forest, overlooking the spectacular Kielder reservoir - Northern Europe’s largest man-made lake. The location has the lowest levels of light pollution in the country and is one of the darkest places in Europe - making it the perfect place for astrophotography.

Whitby West Pier

I favour winter months to avoid the crowds. That way I can photograph without herds of sightseers in my viewfinder. The pier is open 24/7 and is perfect for wide angle lenses. You can walk to the end of the pier and climb down a stepladder to shoot underneath the pier too. If you arrive at sunrise in the winter you'll have the place to yourself probably.

Carew Castle and lake

The photo taken here was after days of heavy rain when the lake was filling up from the adjacent tidal pond with running water under the footbridge. In this location on a clear day the sun will rise up to the side of the castle making a possible great shot. The picturesque millpond attracts redshank, curlew, common sandpiper, shelduck and swans. An admission charge is applicable if you wish to visit the castle.
