Levant tin mine, Penzance

twosugars's picture

Levant tin mine is owned by the National Trust and is perched on a dramatic cliff edge. It has a working steam powered beam engine in its original building as well as the 1900's shaft head.

Spread across the hillside are the remains of the tin processing plant as a short fifty yard long underground passage leading to a mine shaft. The passage is well lit and has modern steps leading down to it and a steel safety grill across the shaft mouth at the other end. Walk 1 minute east along the coast path to get a good view of Pendeen lighthouse and the cliffs and sea.

All footpaths are gravel/ granite chippings and i found no special footwear was required. Entry to the engine house and buildings is subject to an NT entry fee but i found the best views (imho) were to be taken from the surrounding open access land.

SAFETY WARNING>> As in all mining areas of Cornwall STAY ON THE FOOTPATHS!. Striding off across the heather is quite a good way to find an undiscovered disused mine shaft - the hard way...  Not all the old shafts have been found yet.
